What is most worth noting about this year’s Gamescom?
The scale, and the share of Korean games. Exhibition booths sold out for the first time ever across roughly 230,000 square metres, with more than 1,600 companies from 67 countries. At Opening Night Live the evening before, NCSoft’s Aion 2 and Cinder City, Krafton’s Project Zeta and Pearl Abyss’s Crimson Desert Enhanced were unveiled back to back.

Gamescom 2026 runs from 26 to 30 August 2026 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. Opening Night Live (ONL), the de facto opening ceremony, took place the evening before, on 25 August.

This year’s record came from scale. Exhibition booths sold out for the first time ever, across a total exhibition area of about 230,000 square metres. More than 1,600 companies from 67 countries are taking part.

What came out of Opening Night Live

The major titles announced line up like this.

Title What it is
Gears of War: E-Day Series prequel, new trailer
Final Fantasy VII Revelation Extended footage revealed
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansion “Songs of the Past” New details from CD Projekt Red
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros First look at real-time strategy gameplay
Metro 2039 New trailer
Aion 2 · Cinder City NCSoft
Project Zeta Krafton
Crimson Desert Enhanced Pearl Abyss
Pony Island 2: Panda Circus, Onthos, Zoopunk and others Indie and mid-size releases

The biggest talking point was the Witcher 3 expansion. A game released in 2015 is getting a new expansion. A title more than a decade old taking the headline at a major showcase says something about how far the lifespan of a well-made game now stretches in this industry.

What the Korean studios brought

The presence of Korea’s big three was conspicuous at this Gamescom.

NCSoft revealed three titles at ONL: Aion 2, Cinder City and Project Bonfire. Aion 2 drew the hottest domestic response, given the weight of the original’s name.

Krafton came with five: No Law, Project Zeta, Age Twister, Tarae: Unbound, and an unannounced title based on the PUBG IP. Proving it is not a company propped up by PUBG alone is close to the point of this outing.

Pearl Abyss brought Crimson Desert back out under the name Crimson Desert Enhanced. Given how long the title has been awaited, the questions about how finished it is remain exactly where they were.

Why this event is worth watching

Since E3 effectively disappeared, Gamescom has become one of the game industry’s largest business stages of the year. It is world-class in attendance, and the deal volume in the B2B area is large.

Why this stage matters to Korean studios is clear.

  1. The domestic market is already saturated. Growth only comes from abroad
  2. Europe skews to PC and console. To move Korean development capacity, concentrated in mobile, onto a different axis, this is a market you have to pass through
  3. Publishing deals get done here. What happens inside the B2B booths ties to results more directly than any trailer reveal

In other words, the footage on the ONL stage is not a result but a preview. The actual outcome is decided by concurrent players and reviews in the months after launch.

What Korean players should note

  • Aion 2: with a thick base of original players, pre-registration and test schedules are likely to be announced quickly
  • Crimson Desert: with “Enhanced” attached to the name, the question is what changed from the previously shown build
  • The Witcher 3 expansion: it targets players who already own the base game, so checking the standalone expansion price announcement matters more than waiting for a sale
  • Steam festivals: related sales and demo events generally overlap with the Gamescom window. Checking with a demo first is the safer route

In short

  1. Gamescom 2026 runs 26–30 August in Cologne and is the largest ever, with booths sold out, about 230,000 square metres of exhibition space and more than 1,600 companies from 67 countries
  2. ONL took place on the evening of 25 August. The Witcher 3 expansion “Songs of the Past” was the biggest talking point
  3. NCSoft revealed Aion 2, Cinder City and Project Bonfire; Krafton five titles; Pearl Abyss Crimson Desert Enhanced
  4. For Korean studios, Europe is the gateway market for moving onto the PC and console axis
  5. Reveal footage is a preview. The real outcome is decided by concurrent players and reviews after launch

Frequently asked questions

Can the general public attend Gamescom?

The B2C area is open to general visitors and draws hundreds of thousands every year. Tickets often sell out early, though, and the B2B area admits registered industry attendees only.

When do the announced games come out?

It varies by title, and a good many of the ONL announcements gave only a year or left the date unset. The notation at the end of each trailer and the official channels of each company are the most accurate sources.

How different is Aion 2 from the original?

What can be judged from released footage is limited. It is clearly a sequel carrying over the setting and faction structure, but the elements that decide the actual play experience — combat design and monetisation — only become clear once testing runs.

Do games announced at Gamescom usually ship on schedule?

Delays are common. The bigger the title, the longer the gap between announcement and release, and the scope sometimes changes in between. Rather than rushing to pre-order at announcement, checking reviews right before launch is safer.
